Common Mistakes Beginner Footballers Make
Starting football can be exciting, but many beginners make simple mistakes that affect their performance. Understanding these mistakes early can help you improve faster and play with more confidence.
When I first started playing football, I honestly didn’t know what I was doing. I was just excited to play, so I focused more on running around, trying tricks, and copying what I saw other players do. But as I kept playing, I slowly realized I was making a lot of simple mistakes that were stopping me from improving.
At that time, I didn’t even notice these mistakes. But later, when I compared myself with better players, I understood that the real difference wasn’t fancy skills…it was the basics. That’s when I started learning the right way, step by step.
The Mistakes I Made While Learning Football
Here are the mistakes I made when I first started playing football. At the time, I didn’t even realize they were mistakes:
Focusing Only on Skills, Not Basics
In the beginning, I was obsessed with skills like dribbling moves and flashy tricks. I thought that’s what football was all about. But I ignored the basic things like passing properly, staying in position, and playing simple football.
Later I realized that good players don’t always do fancy things…they just do the basics really well. That changed the way I looked at the game completely.
Poor First Touch
My first touch used to be all over the place. Instead of controlling the ball, I would let it bounce away from me. This made it very easy for opponents to steal the ball, and I would lose possession quickly.
Over time, I learned that a good first touch is one of the most important skills in football because it decides what happens next in the play.
Not Looking Around (Low Awareness)
Another big mistake I made was only looking at the ball. I didn’t check where other players were or what was happening around me. Because of that, I often got trapped by defenders or missed easy passing chances.
Good players always scan the field before receiving the ball, but I didn’t understand that at first.
Holding the Ball Too Long
I used to think I could beat everyone on my own, so I would hold the ball for too long. Instead of passing quickly, I tried to do everything myself. Most of the time, this ended up slowing the game, and I would lose the ball.
Later, I realized football is a team game, and quick passing is much more effective than trying to do everything alone.
Poor Positioning
In the beginning, I never really understood where I should stand on the field. I would just run wherever the ball was. This put me out of position most of the time and was not very useful to my team.
With experience, I learned that positioning is about being smart, not just running a lot.
Lack of Fitness and Stamina
I also underestimated fitness. I could play fine for a few minutes, but then I would get tired quickly, and my performance would drop. In the last part of the game, I could barely keep up.
That’s when I understood that stamina is just as important as skill in football.
Ignoring Defense
Like many beginners, I only wanted to attack and score goals. I didn’t care much about defending or tracking back. But this made me less useful overall, because football is not just about scoring, it’s also about stopping goals.
Once I started defending properly, I became a much more balanced player.
Trying to Play Too Fast
I used to rush everything. I would pass or dribble without thinking properly, just trying to play fast. But this usually led to mistakes and losing control of the ball.
I later learned that playing smart is better than playing fast.
Not Communicating
I didn’t talk much during games. I thought football was only about playing, not speaking. But I realized communication is very important, calling for the ball, guiding teammates, and understanding each other makes a big difference.
Looking back, I realize all these mistakes were completely normal for a beginner. Almost every new player goes through them. The important thing is not to be perfect from the start, but to notice your mistakes and improve step by step. Once I started focusing on the basics and playing more simply, my game improved a lot.
